An extremely common question we encounter almost daily is if hemp can get you high, or stoned. While the quick answer is a resounding “NO,” there is much more to be said, concerning the subject. As we always say, the more you’re educated, the better off you will be.

Why does cannabis get you high?

The intoxicating effect that accompanies the use of cannabis (aka: marijuana, weed, pot, etc.) comes from a chemical compound known as THC. Short for tetrahydrocannabinol, THC is one of over 100 known cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant.

Does hemp contain THC?

While hemp does contain THC, it occurs naturally at much lower levels than in typical strains of cannabis. Under US regulations, industrial hemp must contain less than 0.3% THC. This is compared to an average of closer to 20% in today’s recreational and medical strains.

(SIDENOTE: In the early 1970’s the average percentage of THC in seized marijuana was reported to hover around only 2%!)

Is 0.3% enough to show up on a drug screening?

Ingesting, smoking, and vaping any CBD products can lead to a positive test result on drug screenings. And, in this case, “positive” does not mean “acceptable.” While some users of CBD report to be able to pass a drug screening, this is not the case for everyone. We always suggest erring on the side of caution. It is advisable to talk to your employer before taking any CBD products.

What if it made me feel high?

CBD still lacks sufficient data in explaining the wide range of purported effects. While there is not enough THC in any compliant CBD-only products, some users have expressed experiencing certain effects with CBD. Users that consume CBD by vaping concentrates or by smoking hemp flower often report of feelings of mild euphoria or relaxation. This may be attributed to the CBD being delivered to the bloodstream in a manner more rapid than sublingual consumption, but that is purely speculation.

If it doesn’t get you high, what DOES it do?

Claims related to the effectiveness, effects, or efficacy of any CBD products absolutely cannot be made. This is set forth by the Federal Department of Agriculture. What we can tell you is that we have been selling various CBD products to thousands of returning customers for years. There is a wealth of anecdotal evidence to be found online. We suggest browsing through reddit for these anecdotes. But, take anything you read with a grain of salt if it’s accompanied by anyone is trying to sell you something.
